And scriptwriting.

Anyhow, that sexy young bonkers Nun over at Lock and load has me -me'd me thus:-

'When it comes to writing, what do you know you're good at, and what aspect of writing are you worst at? (Procrastination is not permitted as either part of the answer.)'


Well, goodness, gracious, modesty forbids et al, but I actually do think I'm good at
conjuring up a story out of a few words, a scene, or a fog of an idea that barges its way into my otherwise empty brain.

I'm a bit more of a stranger to discipline than I'd like to be (ooh- er, missus,calm down at the back, the discipline of getting down to actual "proper" writing when I can, I mean). I'm not sure I'm au fait with "Lord Structure" and, oh, yeah, I also fink I'm krap at speling...

Others tell me I'm very good at dialogue, my lead characters are well drawn and my plots are exciting and engaging.


They also tell me my structuring can be too loose, my minor characters can sometimes be mere ciphers for the story, and I'm krap at speling...

So, there you go.
I need to work on structure, minor players, discipline, and spelling...

We're back from Hols, and Wow 101st blog!

To think when I started I didn't know what I was blogging about, but, hey baby,look at me now...

Sorry, went a bit Austin Powers then...

So, how's it all going?

Yeah, deadlines are looming fast, so writing time's precious.

But...

If you wanted a bit of procrastination or just as a cunning plan (Cripes! gone all Baldrick now...) to jolt the little grey writing cells (now I'm Hercule Poirot!) outa a blockage...


How's about,( oh no! Jimmy Saville!) in honour of this 101st blog, a writers "room 101" open me-me for now then, now then...(Jim again, what's wrong with me today?)

So, my pet writing hates for room 101:-

1/ Writers block (ha! ha! it be banned forever now, I tell ye!) - bloody hell - now I'm all piratey...

2/ House hold chores as set by the wife or significant other "before you play on the computer" - I mean, chores, really, surely that's why we have non writing partners...(Dunno what Dave and Rachael do!)

3/ Any type of repair man coming round "on your day off"

4/ Computer Viruses ( especially those devious window crashes deliberately set as electronic time bombs by you Mr Gates, the ones that magically happen just as you type that final Oscar winning line and yet just before you hit the "save" button...)

5/ Procrastination!!!

A writer of numerous TV and radio scripts, BBC script editor, ITV executive producer of drama series, and now a director of an independent television company.

I found this book an absolutely brilliant introduction to my new career (‘ark at me.)

UK TV scriptwriter and producer (Jupiter Moon, etc) Mr Smethurst writes plainly and guides you through, starting with the encouraging line “Television needs you.”

The Complete Book of Scriptwriting by J. Michael Straczynski




Fantastic book by top Hollywood screenwriter Lord Straczynski (Babylon 5, etc
he wrote 91 out of 110 episodes!).


This book is used as part of the course work in some Film schools apparently.

I found it a great read, Joseph (or Joe as I call him!) writes in an easy going entertaining way yet somehow remains informative and serious at the same time.


He starts with the history of films coming from theatre etc and includes loads of examples as he leads us through TV, Movies, Plays and animation – the guy’s done it all.

He even includes a Babylon 5 script to show you how it’s done!
